The first time you use an app or online service, you’re likely to see a checkbox that says something like, You agree to our Terms of Service. To proceed, you have to check the box.

You might assume that the Terms of Service doesn’t really matter or reading it isn’t worth your time. So, you check the box without knowing what it says. And that’s where problems can begin. Think about it this way.

Imagine visiting a water park with slides and pools. Before you jump in, you need to sign a contract that looks a lot like Terms of Service. The water looks inviting, so you quickly sign it and jump in.

Then two weeks later, a commercial for the water park appears and there you are, in a swimsuit, on TV. You’re horrified and frustrated. How could this happen? They didn’t ask me about this. Did they?

The contract you signed when entering the park was legally binding. That contract said your image could be used in advertising, but you never saw that section. Now, it’s too late.

The water park contract and Terms of Service on websites and apps are similar. Both are meant to make the relationship between you and the company clear and help avoid disputes.

So that check mark has a lot of power. When you check it, you are agreeing to a set of rules, written by the company, that could impact your privacy, your access to the site and your ability to resolve disputes with the company, among other things.

An example is social networking. Before using a new service, you must check the Terms of Service box. This time, however, you read it and find that it outlines items like ownership of what you share and what represents misuse of the service.

Down in the middle of the document you see information on privacy and find that the company has the right to sell your personal information to other companies, including your email address. In another section, you learn that your account can be closed at any time, without notice.

Suddenly, this new service looks different to you. The terms of service has details that matter and could influence your decision to join. This time, you decide it’s not worth it.

Reading and understanding the Terms of Service agreement provided a way to know your rights and understand the website’s policies. So, it’s not just a single checkbox. If you check it, you are agreeing to a number of checkboxes for rules that could matter to you.

If the rules seem fair to you, check the box and dive in. But if you don’t agree with them, you have the freedom to not check the box and find another service that better fits your needs.

Hello from the CC Robotics Competition. As the teams are diving into the challenge, we’re seeing that team communication helps solve problems and fill the gaps they need to reach their goal.

For example, Team Orange is struggling. They have skills and talent, but can’t seem to get along. The problem is that feedback often leads to hurt feelings and defensiveness. When Neil proposes a new idea, his teammates dismiss it and say it’s Neil’s fault the team is falling behind. This causes Neil to lose confidence and tune out. Without Neil’s help, they’ll never win.

Team Blue, on the other hand, has made amazing progress because of how they communicate. They’ve learned to provide feedback that feels respectful and productive.

Here we can see two two kinds of criticism: Constructive and Destructive. Team Orange’s approach is destructive because it points to problems without addressing how to fix them. It’s discouraging to team members. Team Blue’s criticism is constructive because it recognizes problems, but remains encouraging and focused on the work required to be successful.

Here’s how it works. Each team member is different. Khalid is quiet and diligent. Toshi has high energy. Carmen can get distracted. And Heather is assertive. The team recognizes that a person’s personality is different from the quality of their work. To win, they focus feedback and criticisms on the work and not the person. That’s part of what makes it constructive.

Khalid was nervous before presenting his design. The team was careful to focus on the design and not his personality or abilities. This helped him feel confident and motivated.

When it’s Carmen’s turn, it’s obvious she’s been distracted and falling behind. Her teammates are disappointed, but don’t want to discourage her. So, they focus on positive aspects of her work and provide specific steps she could take to help the team reach their goal.

Toshi is enthusiastic and sometimes becomes a distraction to others. Heather decides to help and chooses to speak with him privately so he’s not embarrassed in front of the team. She is careful to focus on his contribution to the project and specific examples of distraction that causes problems. To help, Heather also described a situation where she was a distraction to others and how it caused a problem.

This made Toshi feel better. He was thankful to hear the feedback privately and agreed to tone it down.

While I appreciate the wonderful video created by GoDaddy to explain this, I do not recommend using GoDaddy for buying your domain name. My recommended company to buy a domain name and hosting is called SiteGround.

While domains and websites are closely connected, they are two very different things.

After registering a domain, you need to do something with it, put it to work for you. Your domain can be used for a website, for an email account, or for both.

You can, however, register a domain and choose NOT to use it for a website or an email account BUT you can't have a website or an email account without a domain.

When used for a website, your domain name is what people type into their browser to find your site — this is why they are sometimes referred to as web addresses.

So godaddy.com is the domain used for GoDaddy's website.

Registering a domain, however, doesn't automatically create a website — it only means that you've registered the domain.

So for example, if you decided to start your own business and you thought of great name for it, you might copyright the name to protect it.

However, simply giving your business a name is only one of many steps that go into building your business.

In the same manner, when you register a domain and want to use it for a website, you'll need to first build the website, and then find a host for it, so it can be visible on the Web.

What's a host? Website hosts are companies that house, serve, and maintain files for one or more websites.

Think of a website hosting company like a shopping center that contains several individual stores.

If you want to open a store at the shopping center, you can lease space and set up shop.

Just like a shopping center, website hosting companies enable you to lease space on their web servers where you can store your website files and make them available for visitors to view.

Because you have registered your domain, you can use it at any web hosting company you want.

Remember your store in the shopping center? Suppose you decided to move your store and lease space at a different shopping center.

If you packed up your products and moved to a new location, you would still be able to use the same name for your store.

The same is true for your domain — regardless of where you decided to host your website's files, your domain remains yours for the duration of your registration.

The dragons and the sharks are two teams who both love to develop software…and recently clients came to them independently with exactly the same needs. How they each complete these projects highlights an emerging way that software is created.

Each team sees software development as a road trip - like trying to get from the east coast to the west coast efficiently and with the best possible outcome for their clients. Right now, everyone involved expects Portland, Oregon to be the ideal place to land.

The dragons are planners. Here one group may research, test and plan every part of the trip and hand-off responsibility to other groups for putting those plans into action.

They make assumptions early in the process that defines the path forward.

The sharks, however, look at their journey a little differently. Portland looks good to them now, but they prefer to keep their options open and learn along the way.

While the dragons are still planning, the sharks get on the road as quickly as possible. Rather than handing off the driving to different teams, they take a mixed team with them throughout the trip.

They look at the trip as a series of sections or legs – and each leg informs the next. At every step, their team takes time to reflect on what they’ve learned and whether or not the route should change. This way, the next leg starts with lessons they learned from the last.

This repeated cycle means the Sharks may move more slowly than the dragons. It also means that the final destination, or what it will take to get there, isn’t always known ahead of time.

While the dragons stay focused on that address in Portland...the sharks reach the Rockies and discover that Portland may not be the best destination for their client’s goals.

Their tests and discussions show real potential in heading towards San Francisco instead. The closer they get to the coast, the more new information guides their way.

In this simple example, the sharks are using agile methodology – with frequent cycles of iteration. They understand that up-front planning is helpful, but the best outcomes come from learning from experience. They plan for change, respond to data and communicate clearly within a diverse team.

The dragons, on the other hand, use the traditional waterfall method, where upfront plans are followed throughout the project.

At the end of the trip, both the sharks and dragons reach the west coast successfully, but at different places.

Portland works for the dragons. But because their early assumptions were a little off, they nearly ran out of gas and didn’t prepare for the weather. By following the plan, client expectations were met.

But the sharks are celebrating in San Jose. Their software works and solves problems their clients didn’t know existed. They discovered a new destination that exceeded their client’s expectations.

While Waterfall methodology can be ideal for some types of projects, Agile Methodology gives software teams the chance to make their outcomes even better than expected.

You've probably seen encyclopedias. Whether you're settling an argument or researching a school project, these books can hold the answers. These days though, the world moves so fast, it's hard for books that were written months or years ago to keep up. Thankfully we have a new kind of encyclopedia that's online, free, built by thousands of people and changes every day.

The idea that thousands of volunteers could create an online encyclopedia doesn't sound possible, but thanks to new technology and specific policies, Wikipedia has become one the top 5 sites on the Web. The site is run by a not-for-profit foundation with a goal to provide everyone on the planet access to the sum of all human knowledge.

To see how it works, let's get started with the "wiki" in Wikipedia. A wiki is a kind of website that allows users to make changes to any page. They simply click edit, make the change and then save the page to share it with the world. This basic concept allows volunteers to contribute information on any subject in Wikipedia. And because Wikipedia is a website - there is no limit to the number of topics it can cover.

Being a wiki means that Wikipedia is always changing. When someone notable passes away, Wikipedia is updated. When news breaks, Wikipedia grows. It all works because tens of thousands of volunteers contribute, and also enforce rules to ensure Wikipedia remains a reliable source for factual information. These users, like any member, can see changes as they happen on each article. For example, if someone posts an advertisement on Wikipedia, which is forbidden - volunteers can easily reverse the change to maintain the article's integrity.

This means every change to Wikipedia is reviewed and must abide by two big rules:

The first is verifiability, which is necessary to ensure high quality. For this reason, Wikipedia articles must rely on information from published sources like books or newspapers - resources known for fact-checking.

Requiring contributors to cite these resources in articles and quotations ensures Wikipedia articles are factual and high quality. If it's not verified, it can't be in Wikipedia. For example, you can write that the US unemployment rate in 1935 was 20.1%, but you must also cite its source for it to remain in Wikipedia. In this case, numerous history books could be verifiable resources.

The second rule requires a neutral point of view. All Wikipedia material must be presented fairly and without bias, just like any other encyclopedia. This means Wikipedia is not a place for contributors to share their own opinions.

Let's say you're an advocate for vaccinations and you write “every parent should get their children vaccinated.” Unfortunately, this is biased and certain to cause disagreement. However, published opinions of experts can be included. For example, writing that: “vaccinating all U.S. children saves an estimated 33,000 lives,” and citing a reputable source is a statement of fact that can be verified. And if there is an opposing view, it should also be included to balance the article and keep it neutral. The article should present all the major opinions without endorsing one over the other.

It's these two rules and the volunteers who uphold them that make Wikipedia a reliable resource that grows each day. And you can be involved. It's all part of the process of building a free encyclopedia - the largest encyclopedia in human history.

That’s why many trackers also have features that turn exercise into a game with points, achievement levels and competition.

Now, let’s look at gamification in the workplace.

Blake was a project manager for a big new product. In the past, finishing a project came with a long list of assignments for his team.

But this time, Blake decided to do something different to test the new product. Instead of normal assignments, he made testing the product more like a game and used an internal website to make it happen. He added all the team members to the website, where they could see their progress on a leaderboard.

Rather than assigning testing tasks, he created challenges for team members with points for each challenge. Discovering problems and completing items earned the team members points and badges that everyone could see. When someone earned 50 points, they unlocked an award.

The project’s leaderboard became a way to rally team members. Along with points, each tester competed for bragging rights and put in extra time just to win. By making work tasks like a game, team motivation grew, the project became more fun and ultimately produced a better product.

Of course, this is just one example. When we collect points for travel, or even a free coffee, we’re involved in gamification. From household chores to work tasks, gamification can motivate people by making tasks fun and interesting - like a game.

While it's there, the bank uses her money to help other customers who need to borrow money. It's like Jasmine is loaning her money to the bank. Because she's helping the bank, they add a little extra money to her account automatically.

It's these payments from the bank that help her money grow over time. This extra money is called "interest", and it's paid to Jasmine over the course of a year. The amount of interest she earns is based on two things: The amount she has in the bank, and the Annual Percentage Yield or APY, which is a rate set by the bank. Here's how they work together.

Let's say you deposit $100 in a savings account with a 3% APY. That $100 will earn $3 in interest over the course of a year. Now, you could take that $3 in interest and buy a latte. But you decide to leave it in the bank.

This way you have more money in the bank, and earn interest on $103 instead of https://www.dotcomtruths.com/$100. As long as you leave it alone, your money will grow even faster because the interest adds up year after year. It's called "compound interest" and this simple idea will help Jasmine buy a home. Here's how.

In her piggy bank, Jasmine has saved $5,000. But for the home she wants, she knows she'll need more, and realizes that smart saving is all about thinking long term. If she deposits this in a bank, and earn 3% APY, that $5,000 would become $9,000 in 20 years. That's $4,000 more thanks to compound interest. $9,000 is good, but it may not be enough.

To help her money grow even faster, Jasmine decides that she can add $100 to her savings each month. That's $1,200 a year - even more money to earn interest! This will be a huge help. Jasmine can see she's getting close.

With the $5,000 she has saved, plus the money she adds monthly, she can save $29,000 over 20 years, if she saved it in a piggy bank. But with compound interest from her bank, that $29,000 could become over $42,000 in 20 years. A nice start on buying her dream home! All she had to do was add money to her savings regularly, and watch it grow! Yay!

To make one of these processes more efficient, we need a way to visualize it. This means laying out steps and decisions so we can truly understand how it works. With this understanding, we can improve the process or teach it to someone else.

A flowchart is a great way to draw and understand a process. The big idea is that almost any process can be drawn and analyzed using a flowchart.

Organizations large and small use flowcharts to understand and improve processes to help the them be more efficient. This could include how a product is built in a factory, how travelers move through an airport, or how a computer program is designed.

Let’s look at a simple example. Imagine it’s time to do the laundry. Your clothes need to be washed with a washing machine. We’ll use a set of standard flowchart shapes to draw this process.

Each process has a beginning, like deciding to do laundry. We’ll use an oval as our starting point. Now we need a way to connect that starting point to the next step, so we’ll use a line with an arrow. Next we’ll need to gather the clothes to be washed. This is an activity and we’ll use a rectangle for this step.

Now, we need to make a decision about the clothes with a yes or no answer. We’ll use a diamond that points to each answer. We’ll sort the clothes by asking whether the fabric is white or not.

This splits the process in two, with different activities. Clothes with colored fabric are washed with cold water and clothes with white fabric are washed with hot water.

In both cases, we take specific steps to add soap, turn on the washer and inspect the clothes when finished. With this process complete, we have another decision: are the clothes clean?

The clothes with colored fabric get a stain remover added and clothes with white fabric get bleach added.

We’ve now drawn a flowchart to visualize and understand a process. Each step and decision is represented, along with what to do when activities have different results.

By laying out each step of a process in a standard way, we can not only understand it and find ways to improve it, but help others learn and see it from a new perspective.
