For instance, meet Roy of Ice Cream by Roy. Other than the people who come to his store, he could never hear what customers said about his ice cream. However, because everyone in the town uses twitter, he can now search for "Ice Cream By Roy" and see tweets from people who mention his product. Then, he can reply to say thanks or follow their future updates. Twitter search helps Roy listen to customers and make the flavors they want.

It's also a great way to learn about news. When an explosion is heard outside of town, the townspeople report it in real time. This means that Roy can check Twitter search to find a constant stream of information, sometimes from the very people who experienced it. He can even limit the results to tweets near a specific location. It's news as it happens.

Every minute of every day on Twitter, people are using some words more than others. Maybe the town has a new mayor, a concert came to town, or the same joke is being told over and over. If the most popular words could appear on a sign, a person just arriving in town could get a feel for what was interesting to the residents at the moment.

On Twitter, the most used words are known as trends and they're a great way to see what's interesting on Twitter. You can always find up to the minute trends on your Twitter profile, or search.twitter.com. Clicking a trending topic shows the most recent tweets that include that word or phrase.

Sometimes, Twitter members work together and use a specific key word, called a hash tag, to connect related tweets. Let’s imagine a storage building that contains bags of your money, photos of your family, important documents and more. For a long time, you could go to the entrance and provide a password to access your property. Your password was memorized which means it’s something that you know by heart.

This system worked for a while, but criminals started trying to guess passwords and the risk became too high. So the owner of the building added a new layer of security, another factor.

This isn’t a code you know by heart. It’s something that you can only receive right when you need it. It’s another factor - something you have.

In this case, you can use an app on your phone that provides a code that is connected to the lock on your door. As long as you enter the code before it expires, you can enter the room.

This is the big idea behind two factor authentication. Knowing only one factor, your password, will only get a criminal into the lobby of your building. To get to your room, they would need a code that is only provided to your phone and expires quickly. That’s the second factor - a code that you have.

Today, more and more websites and apps are offering two factor authentication.

The next time you log in, you’ll enter a username and password you know. Then, the site will ask for your authentication code. In most cases, you’ll use your phone or device to access the code and enter it to complete the login.

Thankfully, it's now easier to know when a website is secure.

When you need to use a website to make a purchase or provide sensitive information, there are two big things to think about:

The first is the connection from your computer to the company's computer. Your name, credit card information and other things have to travel from one to the other. This connection needs to be secure. so that criminals can't access the information in route.

The second is knowing that you're working with a company you trust. If you're working with a company you trust using a secure connection, your information is safe. But how do you know?

Knowing what to look for in a browser is a big step to using secure websites. Let’s consider the connection we mentioned earlier.

Secure websites encrypt information before sending it between computers. this makes the information completely unreadable for criminals. Only the computer on the other end can read it, making it secure.

There are two big ways to tell the connection is secure…First is the address bar, where you’re used to seeing "http". Secure websites have an address that starts http"s" for secure.

You can also look for a padlock icon in the browser. If you see the "s" and padlock the connection is encrypted and secure.

But what about the organization behind the website? - how do we know it's not a criminal with a secure connection? Well, a new system makes this easy. Newer web browsers display color and company names in the address bar that help you know the site is trustworthy. It works like this. Organizations that depend on security can have their websites reviewed and validated by licensed unbiased companies called certificate authorities.

These rigorous reviews ensure the organization and website are trustworthy and using a secure connection. If the tests are passed, the site is issued an EV SSL certificate. and only sites with these certificates display the colored bar, including the company name, along with the address.

Green means Go, red means stop.

This review process means criminals can’t obtain the certificate that's required to display the colorful information. So when you see a site with the green info in the address bar, you can be sure it's legit.

Now, if you're reading the news or checking the weather, security doesn't matter as much, so don't be concerned if you don't see the green bar or security information. Security matters when you send sensitive information like credit card numbers, passwords and private info over the Internet.

For instance, if you're about to make a purchase, your browser holds the clues. Look for the "s" in the address and the padlock to make sure it's secure. And if you’re concerned that the site could be a scam, look for the green information.

With these things in place, you can feel confident that your information is safe and secure.

If you think about it, much of the information that goes into a paper or article can be organized into three groups: “common knowledge” “my ideas”, and “other people’s ideas”. By understanding these groups, we can see why citations matter in our work.  

Let’s start with common knowledge, which consists of well established and reliable facts. For example, George Washington being the first US president is an established fact found in a variety of reliable sources. A year having 365 days is also considered common knowledge.

Next, let’s consider “my ideas”. This group consists of your personal thoughts, opinions, conclusions, and analysis of your topic. If you are conducting your own original research, it would also fall into this category.

And finally, there are other people’s ideas - and these deserve special care. When we research a topic, we’re likely to find and borrow helpful information and discoveries that came from the work of specific individuals or organizations whose work was published in reputable books, journals, articles and websites.  “Other people’s ideas” also include quotes from other writing that support or debate points that you’re making. A paper or project may include all three types of information.

While common knowledge and your ideas don’t usually need special treatment, when other people’s ideas are included in your paper, readers do need to know. This can be done with citations. Using citations shows you’re responsible. You’ve done the research, given credit to the right people, provided the reader with resources for more learning and avoided plagiarism.

A citation consists of two parts that work together. These are the in-text citation and full citations. Here’s how they work…

When you use someone else’s ideas, the reader needs to know, but adding the required information into the middle of your paper would be annoying and hard to read.

So, we need a quick way to indicate when a section is based on someone else's ideas. This is done with an in-text citation. It’s a brief notification within the body of the text that specific words, ideas, figures, or images were taken from other sources.

Often, full citations have all the information needed to find the original publication. These include author names, titles of books or journals, publishers, publication dates, page numbers and more.

Let’s look at two common ways to cite your sources in a paper:  Imagine that you use an idea from a book in your paper and need to cite it.

An in-text citation could might include the author’s last name and year published, author’s last name and page number, or simply a number. These connect the reader to the full citation, which may be in a bibliography at the end of the paper, or in a footnote at the bottom of the page.

Using citations is part of being a responsible student and researcher, but it’s also a service to others. They acknowledge the people whose work helped establish what is known about the world and provides a way for your readers to dive even deeper into your subject.

And unlike piracy on the seven seas, this kind of piracy might seem less risky, more anonymous, and maybe even justifiable to the pirate.

Whatever you believe about online piracy, the fact remains that it breaks the law and by understanding why, piracy may start to look a little bit different.

Think about it this way… in order for creators to keep making the products you love, they need a system that helps them earn a living from their talents. In most countries, that system is based on copyright law.

When someone creates something like a song, computer program or photograph, that creator automatically owns the copyright and has the right to control how it is used and by whom.

Online piracy is illegal because it breaks copyright law and prevents the creator from having control over what they create. But it’s not simply a matter of rights and laws.

Let’s consider the music industry. It may seem like piracy only hurts big corporations, but in reality, it also hurts the artists who make the music. For example, a song may have a songwriter, producer and performer. Often, the sales of a song or album are directly linked to the income of the artist who created it. When music is pirated, sales often suffer and with it, the incomes that support the artists’ work. Without income, your favorite artists may not make music in the future.

Software is another target of piracy. Like music, piracy threatens the software industry, but the biggest risk is using software that’s made by pirates. Here, criminal organizations copy and sell counterfeit software often at a huge discount. It may seem real, but pirated software may work poorly or not work at all. Further, compared to authentic software, it may lack support systems that keep it up-to-date and protected from viruses and criminals. If something goes wrong, support may not be an option.

To avoid pirated software, buy from trusted stores and websites and look for official packaging.

The bottom line is that piracy on the internet is illegal and could have serious consequences. But there’s more to it. Piracy is also a threat to the systems that help creators earn a living and keep our computers safe, supported and secure.

You've probably seen it. You receive an email from your bank or trusted company and it's asking you for information. It looks real, but it's designed to fool you into handing over important information. This is a scam called Phishing, and you need to avoid it.

Most of us have gotten used to doing business online. We buy and sell things. We have accounts with sensitive information. The risk of doing business online is low, as long as you deal directly with organizations you trust. Problems occur when criminals impersonate these organizations, and fool you into handing over sensitive information, like account numbers, passwords, and PIN numbers.

The key to avoiding this scam is awareness. Here's one example. You receive an email that looks like a trustworthy message from a bank. It asks you to click a link to verify information. You assume it's legit. So you click the link and log in to what appears to be your bank's website. At this point, the scam is complete.

They were able to fool you by impersonating the bank's website. There are a few keys to detecting phishing emails. They often try to scare you by saying "your account has been accessed" or "security has been compromised." They also insist that you click a link to verify information or fill out a form.

Do NOT click links or fill out forms in suspicious emails. The email may also have misspellings and call you something like "Valued Customer." The crooks don't know your name! Remember, phishing emails may use the exact same logos, phone numbers, and addresses that appear on your statements or bills.

Always be suspicious of an email that asks for your information. No exceptions! If you receive a phishing email, stay calm. There's no risk in receiving it. Just delete it. You can also safely report it by forwarding it to:

If an email does lead you to a suspicious website, remember to look at the web address. The address in your browser should look familiar. If you suspect that criminals have your information, immediately contact organizations where you have accounts.

To protect yourself in the long run, you might also consider anti-phishing software. Further, check your online accounts and credit reports regularly, and quickly report anything that is out of place.

Consider this… When we read the news, watch a movie, or mow the lawn, we have a choice in how we approach these activities. We can be passive and just participate without thinking about them. Or, we can be active and think about them critically.

This means considering whether or not the news story is accurate, why a movie is good or bad and how to mow the lawn most efficiently. Thinking critically requires effort, but it’s a necessary ingredient for solving problems and identifying opportunities.

Here’s how team Indigo is using critical thinking. To win, they need high quality information for solving problems. But its’s not that easy. The most useful and accurate information can be difficult to see because of inaccurate data, incorrect assumptions, unanswered questions, personal feelings and more. The unreliable information obscures the accurate information.

Critical thinking is the process of analyzing all the information and discarding low quality information until reliable and useful information is what remains. By thinking critically and asking questions, the team can make the path forward more obvious.

Their process starts with identifying the biggest problems and asking questions that highlight potential solutions. These are questions like, “Why was this decision made?” “Are we sure the data is accurate?” and “What assumptions are we making?” Answering these questions leads to more useful information for the team.

With fewer distractions blocking the path, the team can now consider how to optimize and save time by tweaking the design or finding features that can work together. For example, if the wheels were larger, the body could be shaped differently?

Each time an idea is proposed, more questions can be asked, distractions can be discarded and solutions can come into greater focus.

Next, they try to think ahead. Each solution can create a ripple effect. They work together to anticipate how a solution now might create a problem later in the project. Team indigo might spend valuable time debating their ideas, and that’s okay. They are being active and using logic and reason to remove all the issues and focus on what they need to succeed. The ideas and solutions that matter are the ones that can survive their critical thinking.

In this example, we’ve seen critical thinking be used to find useful information, solve problems and plan ahead, but that’s just the beginning. The next time you’re on a team or solving a problem, be an active thinker and ask questions. By thinking critically, you can help yourself or your team be successful.
