The chances are you’ve been using apps for years. Your home or work computer has apps like a spreadsheet program, calculator or photo editor. Recently these apps, or applications, evolved in a big way.

Let’s start with platforms. You know, a place to put things. A table, in a basic sense, is a platform. You plug in some plates, cups and flatware and it turns into a great place to eat.

Computers work the same way. They create platforms for software applications. A spreadsheet and an accounting app can turn a computer into a business tool. Music and video apps can make a computer a studio.

For most of their history, apps have seemed big and expensive. We often bought them at a store and loaded them onto a computer with a disk. And most of these apps didn’t connect to the Internet.

Recently platforms have changed in big ways. Our mobile phones and tablets became useful platforms just like our computers, and this enabled a different kind of app. Instead of big expensive programs, many apps became smaller and cheaper. Instead of coming in a box or taking hours to download, they could be purchased or downloaded for free from the Internet with a click, even on the go.

This made apps collectible. For little investment, we could collect apps on our devices that reflect our needs and interests. One person’s collection may focus on gaming, another, business, or both. Now apps may wake you up in the morning, give you a snapshot of the news, play the music you like, help you get to the airport, check you in and help you read your new book all from the palm of your hand.

To support all these new apps, we need online marketplaces that make them easy to purchase and download. This way, small teams and large organizations have a way to market, give away or sell thousands of new apps.

And these new apps have another advantage. Many are built to work with the Internet.

So apps aren’t really new. What have changed are platforms and marketplaces that make them easy to purchase and collect for whatever you need to do.

Let’s say that instead of you recording cars at one intersection, we put sensors at every intersection in the U.S. and they all report data. Over a day, the sensors report millions of pieces of data, over a week, billions and in a month, over 100 billion pieces - and growing every day.

Hidden in this big pile of growing data are important clues that could help commuters save time.

That’s the goal of big data – turning all these data into useful information. But it’s not that easy.

Big Data is really huge and complex data. To make it useful information we need a few things in place. First, we need a place to put it - our normal computers and programs are too small and slow. Big Data needs serious computing power.

Second, we have to handle lots of incoming traffic data, which may come from multiple sources and in different formats. To be useful, it needs to be in a format that makes it similar and comparable.

But we also need to handle data about relevant and changing conditions, like weather or gas prices. With these systems in place, we can collect and analyze huge amounts of complex data in real time - data that can provide clues to solving traffic problems and a lot more.

Consider the enormous amount of data produced by the healthcare industry, weather organizations and social networks. These data could help with healthier lives, safer families and more successful businesses.

Today scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs and organizations of all types are focused on putting big data to work.

By understanding the challenges of working with Big Data, we can make it work for us.

While big data may not make the light change when we want, it may help us find ways to get around a little more efficiently.

The problem with computers is that most of us don’t speak their language. We need a translator, something that can understand our needs and put the computer to work for us. The translator is called software and it makes computers useful.

Look at it this way. Like a typewriter, a computer without software is just a lifeless machine. By adding software, the computer becomes more alive, easy to use, and built for you. Most computers have two basic kinds: The operating system and software programs.

If you’ve ever used a computer, you’ve used an operating system. From saving files, to using a mouse or fixing problems, the operating system covers the basics. Operating systems come with all new computers and do a lot of same things. You’ve seen them called Windows, Mac and Linux.

But the operating system is only part of what we need. To make them personalized and more useful, we can add software programs. For example, if you need to edit a photo you can add a software program that is built for that purpose. If you need to design a house, you can add a software program that lets you see the house from all sides.

By adding and removing software programs, you can make the computer fit with exactly what you want to do. And adding most software programs is easy. You can get them from a computer store or download them from the Internet. No computer nerds required.

Once a program is on your computer, opening it is as easy as clicking an icon.

But what is a software program? What’s really happening when you open one? Think about it this way. Computers are really good at following instructions. And a software program is essentially a set of instructions that tells the computer exactly what to do.

When you open a program, the computer goes to work, completing the instructions until the program is ready for you to use. The ability to add and remove software programs means that everyone’s computer can be different and unique to them.

So, to review. We’ve talked about operating systems that take care of the basics, and software programs that make computers personalized. It’s this combination that makes computers so useful. But it’s not limited to computers on your desk.

Consider your cell phone. Just like a computer without software, it’s a lifeless machine that doesn’t speak our language. Thankfully, cell phones have software that bring them to life.

The problem with money, for most people, is that it's not always in-hand when we need it.

Thankfully, we can borrow. Banks give us a loan and we pay them back later, usually with a little extra money called interest. Interest is like a fee for borrowing money.

But it doesn’t always make sense to ask the bank to borrow money for everyday purchases, and carrying a lot of cash can be a pain. It would be easier if we could borrow money from the bank as we need it over a month, then pay it back later, all at once.

That’s what credit cards let us do. The bank gives us an easy way to pay today, and keep track of it, then pay them back later. Let’s look at how this works.

Meet Lucia. Her friend recently recommended getting a credit card. After thinking it over, she applied for one and soon a card arrived in the mail.

In reading the paperwork, she noticed a few big points about this credit card. First, her credit card has a limit of $500. It stops working when she spends that amount.

Second, her credit card comes with an interest rate, which is a percentage of the amount she spends. This interest is just like the fees her bank charges for loaning money, but it’s often more expensive, and this interest is optional. Here’s why:

She has a choice, if she only buys what she can afford and completely pays off her credit card each month, she can completely avoid paying interest. But, if she pays anything less, she has to pay interest on what she still owes. And over time, interest can build up quickly and make those purchases more expensive.

Because she's smart, her goal is to avoid interest and pay off her credit card, in full, every month. Yaaay!

But her friend Marlon wasn't so smart. He spent the limit on his credit card and didn’t even bother paying the minimum monthly payment. The interest and fees stacked up until he owed twice the amount he originally spent.

Frustrated, he gave up trying to manage it. This led the credit card company to report his debt which prevented him from getting other credit cards, borrowing money or using credit for years into the future.

Credit cards can be useful and convenient, but that doesn’t matter if they’re not managed responsibly. Buy only what you can afford, pay it off each month and you’ll have more money and better opportunities in the future.

For many years, documents lived on our computers. When online documents came along, they started to live on the internet and that changed how we created and shared them. This video explains how online documents differ from local documents saved on a computer. It teaches:

Back in the old days, documents mostly existed on paper that could be copied, shared and stored for future reference. When someone far away needed the document, it could be sent in the mail.

Today, documents play the same role, but computers and the internet have changed how we think about them.

Let’s say you needed to create a document that summarizes a recent meeting. In this example, you use software on your computer to do it. With your work done, you give the file a name

To share the document, you find the doc on your computer and attach it to an email. This is called a local file, because it’s saved in a folder on your computer.

This system works, but can cause problems. If your computer dies, the file could be lost. Further, if you send a file to another person who saves it on their computer, the file now has two versions that become difficult to manage when changes are made.

These problems went away when you discovered online documents. In this case, you log in to a website to create a new document, usually for free. There is no file saved on a computer. The document exists as a web page that automatically saves your work.

The web site organizes your documents and makes them available anywhere you can log in, including smartphones and tablets.

Instead of sending attachments to colleagues, you can share the online document via email and control who can view and edit it. Once invited, they can access the document in their browser. This makes collaboration easier because there’s only one version of the document.

It’s also possible to publish the document so that anyone with a link can view it without logging in.

And it’s not just meeting notes. Presentations and spreadsheets can also be online documents.

The good news is, you have a choice. Most documents can be either local or web-based, depending on the situation.

This means you could create a document using software on your computer and then import it into an online system. Or vice-versa.

We’ve come a long way and now, documents are more efficient and flexible than ever before. How you use them is up to you.
