What is the difference between a domain name and a website?

While I appreciate the wonderful video created by GoDaddy to explain this, I do not recommend using GoDaddy for buying your domain name. My recommended company to buy a domain name and hosting is called SiteGround.

While domains and websites are closely connected, they are two very different things.

After registering a domain, you need to do something with it, put it to work for you. Your domain can be used for a website, for an email account, or for both.

You can, however, register a domain and choose NOT to use it for a website or an email account BUT you can't have a website or an email account without a domain.

When used for a website, your domain name is what people type into their browser to find your site — this is why they are sometimes referred to as web addresses.

So godaddy.com is the domain used for GoDaddy's website.

Registering a domain, however, doesn't automatically create a website — it only means that you've registered the domain.

So for example, if you decided to start your own business and you thought of great name for it, you might copyright the name to protect it.

However, simply giving your business a name is only one of many steps that go into building your business.

In the same manner, when you register a domain and want to use it for a website, you'll need to first build the website, and then find a host for it, so it can be visible on the Web.

What's a host? Website hosts are companies that house, serve, and maintain files for one or more websites.

Think of a website hosting company like a shopping center that contains several individual stores.

If you want to open a store at the shopping center, you can lease space and set up shop.

Just like a shopping center, website hosting companies enable you to lease space on their web servers where you can store your website files and make them available for visitors to view.

Because you have registered your domain, you can use it at any web hosting company you want.

Remember your store in the shopping center? Suppose you decided to move your store and lease space at a different shopping center.

If you packed up your products and moved to a new location, you would still be able to use the same name for your store.

The same is true for your domain — regardless of where you decided to host your website's files, your domain remains yours for the duration of your registration.

Answer: Importing contacts is pretty straight forward but there is a better way than manually adding them one by one. Let us show you how!

Here are the steps on how to import or upload a new contact in New Zenler:

Individual

Click on Site tab ot top.
Click People
On this page, click Add User to manually add contacts if you are adding 1 or a few.
Fill out the needed information and click on ADD button and you are done!

Multiple Contacts

Click on Site tab ot top.
Click People
On this page, click Import Users
Select the role of the contacts you are uplaoding and click Choose File button to upload the CSV file you prepared.
Click Next
Map the information to match the colums you have in your CSV file.
Click Next
Add necesarry tag, courses, plan, and funnels to the contacts you are importing based on your liking.
Click Finish and wait for a few minutes for the contacts to be fully imported.

Emma loves dogs and recently, her favors for friends have turned into a business. And now she needs a website to do it full time. But she’s not sure how it all fits together. Does she only need a domain name like emmasdogcare.com or is there more to think about?

Over coffee a friend gave Emma a brief lesson on getting started with a custom-built website. First, she would need a domain name. Emma likes the domain name emmasdogcare.com for her site, but she needs to be sure it’s available. To check availability, she can use a domain name website to search for it.

If emmasdogcare.com is available, she can register it. This means paying a modest annual fee to the company that registers the name. As long as she keeps up with these payments, the name is exclusively hers to use for the website and email addresses.

If the .com suffix is not available, she can use others like .biz or .net. With a domain name secured, she could think about what the website should contain. She knows some local web designers and developers who help her get a design in place that has images, colors and descriptions of her services.

She now has two important things: the domain name and a design for the site. Next, her website needs a home - a place for the images and words to live and be accessible on the web. That home is a kind of computer called a server. When a person visits a website, what appears on their screen originates from the server.

The problem is that these servers can be a pain to manage, so most people work with companies who specialize in managing servers, DNS and websites. These companies are called “hosts”. For a fee, Emma can give her website a secure and reliable home and leave the technical aspects to the experts. The host gives Emma and her designers and developers a secure way to build the site and make changes.

Now she has it all, but to get her site online, she’ll need to make sure all the organizations are on the same page. This means telling her domain name registrar where to find the new website at the host. This way, when someone types emmasdogcare.com, the domain name system knows where to find the site and make it available.

Once everything is set, the system works seamlessly. Emmasdogcare now has a home on the web and Emma gets to pick her favorite dog pics for her website.

Think about the information that really matters to you. These may be things like photos or videos of your family. It could mean files or contacts. Or credit card numbers or passwords you use for online banking. Today, all these things live on our smartphones and it’s pretty awesome.

The problem is that smartphones are small and easy to lose. They have different security than our computers and have risks that may not be as obvious. Let’s take a look at how we can keep them safe and secure.

Imagine you’re waiting for a bus and you pretend that criminals are near you and want the info on your phone. What can you do?

Well, the first thing is to make it very difficult to get into the phone. You can do that by using a unique passcode or something unique to you like a fingerprint or your face. Then, be sure to set your phone to lock automatically when you’re not using it. And the criminals may be watching. Enter the code so no one can see you do it.

And if you leave your phone unattended, even for a minute, it could be taken. When it’s not in your hand, put it in a safe place that hides it from view.

Next, remember that the criminals may be able to fool you into giving them access remotely. In public places, don’t connect to unsecured wifi because you may connect to a criminal’s computer instead. The same is true with messages that appear on your phone.

The criminals may send you texts, alerts or even phone calls that try to trick you into downloading a dangerous app or handing over information like passwords, credit card numbers and more. If it looks suspicious, ignore it and don’t click links you don’t recognize.

And you can be proactive. Is your phone’s software up to date? Using old software can leave doors open for the criminals to access your phone.

And remember that if your phone is taken or is infected with a virus, it may become unusable. By backing up your phone consistently, you can recover your data quickly.

Your choices also matter. Do you know the privacy policies of the apps and websites you use? Are you careful about what you share and how it may be used? Being safe with a device means understanding the risks and being careful about what you share.

For example, a photo you share may automatically include location information. To increase your privacy, you can choose to turn off location services completely, or on apps that don’t require it.

By taking a few actions and being aware, you be confident that your information is secure, backed-up and protected from criminals.

When you visit a website, it’s easy to assume that one organization owns and runs everything you see on the site. But these days, many websites are actually a combination of specialized tools from organizations across the Web. And making it all work is something called Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs.

Meet Carson. He has idea for really cool interactive maps and he sees an opportunity to sell them on his website, but he has a problem. The maps would require a huge amount of data to work and he can’t afford the programmers and hardware to make it successful. And maintaining it all is a hassle. He just wants to make the maps a reality.

Carson has two big concerns: First, he needs an easy way to access and manage all the map data. Second, he needs a way to collect payment from customer credit cards. These are complicated tools to build and he knows there must be options.

In doing research, he found companies that specialize in the software and data he needs. He considered buying their tools outright, but it seemed too expensive and he would have to manage it himself. He needed something easier.

That’s when he learned about Application Programming Interfaces or APIs. APIs meant that he could rely on organizations that specialize and connect his website to their tools over the Internet. They simply provide a way for websites and applications like Carson’s to connect to and use their system.

This connection, or interface, makes it possible for two different systems to talk to each other and make requests.

For example, instead of Carson having to store and manage maps and data, he can use a map company’s API to do the heavy lifting. His website just asks for data and the API delivers it.

The same thing is true for billing. Instead of having to manage credit card numbers and billing details, his website hooks into a billing company API that provides and stores this information. All Carson needs is a bit of programming to make sure that his application and the API speak the same language. With this in place, information can be processed quickly and reliably, usually for a fee.

These days, his website visitors can try out and purchase Carson’s maps and it all works seamlessly. And behind the scenes, APIs are connecting his service to specialists via the Internet. And he’s not alone, today organizations large and small are depending on APIs because they create connections with specialists that help keep up-front costs down and provide a solid foundation for getting started.

Here is a great simple and short explainer video from YouTube from a company called GoDaddy, that sells domain names.

It is important for me to note that while I seriously appreciate GoDaddy's high quality explainer video, I have been a customer of GoDaddy and I definitely do not recommend buying a domain name from them.
