These days we use the Web to communicate more than ever - and much of what we say is sensitive. From private email messages to bank transactions - we need ways to use the web with confidence. Encryption, which makes online communication unreadable, is what helps give us this confidence.

Encryption is an old idea. For millennia soldiers have needed a way to send messages that couldn’t be read by the enemy. Instead of writing a message using normal words, they substituted letters in a systematic and secret way.

This is called a key. This key for example, is “three letters” which means moving the alphabet over by three letters. And by knowing the secret key, the message could be decoded.

This basic idea is what keeps our communications secure on the Web today. Instead of using the alphabet, this encryption involves computers and serious math, so the code is nearly impossible to break.

On the Web today, most encryption in managed through two different types of keys. They are Symmetric and Public Key Encryption. A popular analogy goes like this…

Alice and Bob need to send private messages to one another using the postal service. They decide to use a box with a padlock and two identical keys, one for each person.

With the keys in place, they can send the box back and forth and open it with the keys. This is called symmetric encryption.

On the Internet this means that the exact same digital key must be used to encrypt and decrypt the message. And that’s a problem. If a key is lost or stolen, the whole system is compromised. And when more people need more identical keys, the risk goes up.

A more sophisticated way to share keys, especially on the Web, is to use Public Keys. In this example, Bob sends Alice an open padlock (or public key), and keeps his private key. She then uses it to lock (or encrypt) her box before sending it back. This way, when it arrives, Bob can open it without having to share his private key with anyone.

On the Internet, this means that a bank website can automatically provide a public key to your web browser.

With the key in place, banking information sent from your browser can be encrypted so the only thing that will unlock it is the bank’s private key.

Once it’s unlocked, and everything checks out, you can do business securely with the bank website.

It is this system, behind the scenes, that gives us confidence that information we share on the Web can be kept private and secure.

Consider how it worked for Juanita. Her 12th grade math class was starting to learn calculus in the traditional way.

This approach had obvious problems: the students would become bored in class lectures and tune out. Then, at home, they would get stuck and become frustrated, resulting in incomplete homework.

Recently she tried a flipped classroom instead. Here, she assigned students a different kind of homework; not problems to solve, but concepts and ideas to understand. This way, her students were in control of their learning. They could read materials, watch videos and participate in online discussions on their own time and choice of devices.

To help, Juanita learned how to record videos and lectures that students could watch at home. Then, the next day in the classroom, time was used for solving real problems. Juanita could be there when the students needed her help.

They could apply what they learned at home to problems and group activities in the classroom.

The problem is that your identity isn’t very secure without attention. A criminal can easily steal it, pretend to be you and cause serious problems.

Think about it this way… Organizations like banks depend on each customer having a unique identity. They establish this with information like your name, social security number, address and birthdate.

Once your identity is established, it becomes easier to work with the bank, manage your finances, withdraw money, and apply for credit cards and loans. Online, you can use passwords and PINs to access your accounts and personal information.

If a criminal steals your identity, they can fool organizations and access the same resources you can. If this happens, they can change your contact info, billing address and login information so you lose access. Then, they can apply for credit cards and loans that put you in debt and ruin your credit, before you even know there’s a problem.

Identity theft can happen to anyone and it takes years to recover. The key to reducing this risk is awareness.

In order for a criminal to steal your identity they need your personal information like account numbers, passwords, medical records and social security numbers.

This information often appears on documents that criminals may be able to find when we’re careless. Always keep sensitive documents in a safe place and if possible, have a mailbox with a lock. Be careful what you put in the trash and shred any documents that may be a risk.

Your computers and devices can also be risks. Use strong passwords and PINs, and a password manager to help make it easy.

Criminals may also contact you directly, posing as an organization, and fool you into handing over the personal information they need. Remember, organizations like your tax office and banks will NOT call you to ask for personal or account information. Be aware and never give out passwords, PINs or social security numbers over the phone.

The same is true with email and websites, where criminals are very good at appearing official. If an email looks suspicious or asks for your account information, don’t click any links. Just delete it.

Protecting yourself also means paying close attention to bank statements and bills. If something looks out of place, contact the organization immediately.

Above all, remember that your identity is a target for criminals. Don’t make it easy for them and you’ll be able to avoid years of problems.

Because she owns the headphones, she has the right to sell them or give them away. Ownership means they’re her property. When ownership of physical property, like headphones, changes, it’s easy to see.

But Candice is also creative. She takes photos and has ideas. She uses her mind to produce valuable things like music. When she creates a new song, she owns it and has a right to use it as she wishes, just like a physical object.

The problem is that the ownership of intangible things like music, literature and photography is difficult to see. Someone could wrongly claim ownership of her song and sell it without her knowing. To prevent these problems, she needs a public way to establish her ownership so that she alone can decide how it will be used.

In many countries, intellectual property laws work to establish and protect ownership of intangible property like Candice’s song. They are copyright, patent, and trademark and laws, among others. It’s these laws that allow people to control distribution of and earn money from the things they create with their minds.

For example, let’s say Candice, first, wants to be sure she is the only person who can reproduce or sell her song. Copyright law is what gives her this right. As the creator, she owns the copyright automatically, which means she is the only one who can reproduce or sell the song. To make her ownership publicly known, she registers her song with the Copyright Office.

Second, Candice invented a new kind of instrument and wants to be sure that no one can copy it. She does this by filing a patent application with the patent office that states what it is and what it does. If the patent is granted, she can prevent others from copying her invention.

Third, with her innovations, Candice is able to create a new business with a unique brand that includes a name and logo. To identify her new instrument by her brand, and to distinguish her from competitors, she applies for a trademark registration with the trademark office that describes her business name and logo. Candice uses the ™ in her logo once she starts using the brand to sell her instrument. And she can use the R symbol once the trademark is officially registered. These symbols show that she has the right to prevent others from her industry from looking too much like her brand and confusing customers.

Candice’s music business is just one example. Copyright, patents and trademarks can apply to a wide variety of intangible or intellectual property. These laws ensure that even if we can’t hold something in our hands, we can still own it, protect it and use it to earn a living.

You've probably seen it. You receive an email from your bank or trusted company and it's asking you for information. It looks real, but it's designed to fool you into handing over important information. This is a scam called Phishing, and you need to avoid it.

Most of us have gotten used to doing business online. We buy and sell things. We have accounts with sensitive information. The risk of doing business online is low, as long as you deal directly with organizations you trust. Problems occur when criminals impersonate these organizations, and fool you into handing over sensitive information, like account numbers, passwords, and PIN numbers.

The key to avoiding this scam is awareness. Here's one example. You receive an email that looks like a trustworthy message from a bank. It asks you to click a link to verify information. You assume it's legit. So you click the link and log in to what appears to be your bank's website. At this point, the scam is complete.

They were able to fool you by impersonating the bank's website. There are a few keys to detecting phishing emails. They often try to scare you by saying "your account has been accessed" or "security has been compromised." They also insist that you click a link to verify information or fill out a form.

Do NOT click links or fill out forms in suspicious emails. The email may also have misspellings and call you something like "Valued Customer." The crooks don't know your name! Remember, phishing emails may use the exact same logos, phone numbers, and addresses that appear on your statements or bills.

Always be suspicious of an email that asks for your information. No exceptions! If you receive a phishing email, stay calm. There's no risk in receiving it. Just delete it. You can also safely report it by forwarding it to:

If an email does lead you to a suspicious website, remember to look at the web address. The address in your browser should look familiar. If you suspect that criminals have your information, immediately contact organizations where you have accounts.

To protect yourself in the long run, you might also consider anti-phishing software. Further, check your online accounts and credit reports regularly, and quickly report anything that is out of place.

Researching a topic can be difficult when we have to sift through a huge amount of information. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and frustrated when you don’t know what information to trust. 

A key skill in research is efficiently separating the trustworthy information from the biased or misleading information. One way to do this is to use articles from peer reviewed journals.

Think about it like this… On one side we have researchers working hard to understand or develop something new, like a drug. On the other side is the public who could benefit from new findings and discoveries. The researchers want their findings to be shared with the public and have a positive impact. To accomplish this, their work must be deemed trustworthy and credible. 

The problem is that some research is done poorly and could mislead or harm people. So, we need a way to ensure that the most credible research reaches the public.  This job is often accomplished by professional or peer reviewed journals that serve as gatekeepers for new research. These journals review and analyze the new information and will only publish findings they find trustworthy and up to their standards.

This process is called Peer Review and a journal’s reputation depends on it. Here’s how it works…  

Dimitri and Denise have conducted a study on soil quality that they believe will help farmers. With the study complete, they write an article explaining the study’s goals, methods, findings and recommendations, and submit the paper to the Journal of Soil Quality. 

The journal then assembles a panel of experts or “peers” who specializes in soil to read the article, without knowing who wrote it, and investigates the team’s information. It’s this panel of experts who decides if Dimitri and Denise’s article meets or exceeds the standards for publishing in the journal. The peer reviewers may accept the paper and recommend it for publishing, request changes before accepting it, or reject the paper completely. It’s this peer review process that helps ensure only credible information is published in the journal.

Dimitri and Denise’s article was accepted by the panel with minor revisions and published for future reference. Unlike blog posts, books or even newspaper articles, peer reviewed journals use a rigorous process designed to make trustworthiness and credibility the highest priority. 

When doing research, keep peer reviewed journals and articles in mind because they’ve done the hard work to establish what research can be trusted and their work can save you valuable time.
