You remember what it was like in school. IT WAS BORING! You sat in class, memorized as much as you could and tried to pass a test at the end. But is that good enough? These days school can be more interesting and effective by focusing students on work that matters.

Most adults live in a world of projects. Whether it’s a job assignment, home improvement or planning a wedding, we need to actively solve problems. But unfortunately, schoolwork looks more like this than this.

Let’s take a look at this Project Based World. Meet Claire. She was recently presented with a challenge. Her company, Super Suds, makes soap and it was up to her to find the most earth-friendly way to produce it in the future. Her boss gave her a budget and a few requirements - and it was up to her to come up with a solution. She organized and managed a team who researched the options and created materials summarizing the issues. Claire’s team asked for feedback and presented their findings to the boss.

Claire came out of the project looking like a rock star and she learned a lot about green products. If you look closely, Claire’s success involved critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Things that aren’t often taught in traditional classrooms.

The world needs more Claires. So how do we get them?

The answer is Project Based Learning or PBL. By focusing students on a project, teachers put them on a path that deepens their knowledge and builds skills they’ll need in the future.

Here’s what I mean. Mr. Simmons has always been a good science teacher and his students do well on Fridays’ tests. Unfortunately, what they learned was gone by Saturday morning. That wasn’t good enough for him. Soon he learned about Project Based Learning and decided to give it a shot.

Mr. Simmons got the idea for his first project on microorganisms when nearly half of his students were suddenly absent with the flu. He asked his students why they thought so many of their classmates got sick at the same time. That lively discussion produced a lot of good questions and a list of things the kids wanted to know. Mr. Simmons then announced their project was to help elementary schools kids understand - How can we not get sick?

After dividing the class into teams, he got them started on the project. It was up to the students to ask questions, research, collaborate, give each other feedback and figure out the best ways to make their points clear to children. One team chose to make an educational video on the connection between hand washing and avoiding the flu. Another chose to create posters to show how viruses spread.

The project teams showed off their final work to an enthusiastic audience of parents and their children at a nearby elementary school. Sitting in the front row was our good friend and local rock star Claire, who saw a bit of herself in the students. It was clear that the project was a success for the students, the audience, and Mr. Simmons.

His students practiced critical thinking, collaboration and communication. The project wasn’t about memorization, but learning in-depth about viruses and how to prevent spreading disease - A lesson they will never forget.

At the end of the presentation, Claire introduced herself to the students and told them that they were rockstars, and that the world needs more people who can think like them.

Well, these days new kinds of codes are appearing that are scanable with camera phones.

In our online world, everything is linked together. You visit a website, and click a link to visit another site, send a message, view a photo or download a video. A simple click makes everything possible.

On the other hand, our physical world is what you see walking down the street. The problem is – nothing is clickable. You can’t click a URL on a container to see recipes. You can’t click a statue to read about it on Wikipedia. So, you end up having to type in a link, take notes or just keep walking. But that’s starting to change.

You may have seen codes like these. They’re called QR or “quick response” codes and they mean your camera phone can now be a little like a cashier’s scanner.

Once you have an QR reader app on your smartphone, you can point your camera phone at these codes and immediately grab useful information.

Let’s say you’re running errands and walk by a sign that says “New Show Coming Soon” and there’s a QR code. You can just open your QR reader app, point your camera phone at the code and the app will automatically give you options.

No links to remember, no notes - just point your phone at the QR code and the real world becomes clickable.

But that’s just the beginning. Imagine visiting a landmark and using a QR code to watch a video about it. Or scanning a QR code in a newspaper or magazine to email a link to a friend. Or scanning one to follow your local bakery on Twitter.

QR codes are important because, for the first time, they make the real world...clickable.

To retire like Caroline, the first step is understanding how to save for retirement. The basic idea is to start saving now and save as much as possible over a long term.

To start, you'll need a place to save it. It's usually called a retirement account and two examples are 401ks and IRAs. Many employers offer a 401K program or you can open an IRA yourself. Once you have an account, you add a little bit of your income to it on a regular basis so the money you contribute over the years, plus what it earns, creates a fund that's ready to support your retirement. These accounts are meant for a lifetime of savings, so don't plan on touching it until retirement.

To get an account started, you'll work with a representative to decide on an amount that you can contribute to the account with each paycheck. This way, you don't have to think about it - your retirement account grows automatically as long as you have income. And some employers even offer to contribute to your account too. That's free retirement money that will buy a lot of maitais. And remember you have to pay tax on your income. By contributing part of your income to a retirement account, there's less income that's taxable with each paycheck.

The money in these accounts is usually invested in the stock market like a normal investment, but retirement accounts are different. Here's why.

When you invest in stocks normally, they hopefully grow in value. Each year, you have to pay taxes on the money as it grows. That's tax money that could be making you more money. Retirement accounts are designed to protect you from having to pay taxes on your money as it grows year after year. This way, your money can grow faster over the long term. Of course, you'll still have to pay taxes, but most retirement accounts make it possible to delay paying taxes until you withdraw the money. But even considering these taxes, you've been able to build a fund that will support a long and comfortable retirement.

The best thing you can do is start a retirement account as early as possible and contribute as much as you can to your account.

Chances are, you use passwords everyday. To open your computer, to log into your favorite websites, to get work done.

The easy route is to have a simple password that works everywhere. Unfortunately, this can be a problem. Criminals are very good at guessing passwords. Some have computer programs that can make millions of guesses until something works.

And if they already know information about you, it's even easier. Your job is to create a password that is very hard to guess. Here's how:

Your first thought may be to use a pet's name, a birthdate, an address or parts of a phone number. These things are too easy for criminals to discover, so don't use them. Your password should not include info about you.

Thankfully, there are ways to have memorable, but hard-to-guess passwords. Consider this: In addition to single words, phrases can also be easy to remember. Maybe it's a favorite song lyric, or quote. An example is "Jack and Jill Went Up The Hill” That's easy to remember, right?

Well, your password is there - it's the first letter of each word. In this example, this would be your password. That's not something that is easily guessed.

Here's why. First - it's not in the dictionary. This makes guessing it harder. There are about 60,000 words in English. A computer can test out those words pretty quickly, so don't use them.

But there's more. This password could still be stronger by adding upper case letters, numbers or special characters. So this is a very strong password - but there's still a risk.

If you write it down, be careful where you keep it. And be aware that someone can look over your shoulder or find it in your trash. Giving it to loved-ones is also risky - they may not be as cautious as you are. Only you should know your password.

Criminals may also try to fool you into handing it over via phone calls. Never tell anyone your password over the phone.

And be careful when you get an email that asks for a password - it could be a scam. To help avoid problems, don't use the same password everywhere – that’s like having one key that unlocks everything you own. The stakes are high if you lose it.

Also, be careful if you use a computer that is not yours. Let's say you check email using a computer in a store, library or computer lab. You login, check email and walk away. The next person to use that computer now has access to your email account and all the information in it. Always remember to log out of each site you visit on a computer that isn't yours.

Passwords are an essential part of life online - and if we're not careful about keeping them secret, they can cause big problems. By understanding the risks and making passwords stronger, we can feel a little more secure.

Silas was able to take a risky situation and turn it into an informative message - without taking the rest of the company's valuable time. He added value and built trust with customers - and that's the main role of employees using social media, whether is a crisis like a defective chair model, every day customer support or just sharing information.

The web is too wide for a company to control every communication. But a company can understand the growing influence of social media, and create an environment where employees are empowered to participate and build trust with their customers.

Let's get started by talking about companies. There are two basic types. The first is called a private company. Ownership in these companies is private, which means it's not available to everyone. They are usually small to medium-sized and there are a lot of them, from the bakery down the street to a local trucking company. Private companies are typically owned by an individual or a small group of people. Because ownership is limited, we won't worry about them.

Our focus is on companies that offer ownership to everyone. These are called "public" companies. Here's how they work.

Let's say Zipper Corp is a successful company that has big plans. It wants to expand and build a button factory, but it doesn't have enough money. Because it's a public company, Zipper Corp can divide up the ownership of part of the company into thousands of pieces and sell them to people like Maya. These are company stock, also called shares. This way, Maya gets to own a small part of the company and Zipper Corp can raise money for their new factory. Being a public company allows Zipper Corp to raise money from lots of new owners like Maya.

Now, Maya's share of the company has a value that typically changes each business day. When Zipper Corp is doing well, the future of the company can look promising. This means the value of the company and the value of her shares may go up. People like Maya buy shares because they can make money by selling them at the right time. The big idea is to buy shares at a low price and sell them at a higher price. Of course, this is risky, because a company's future is hard to predict.

For example, people who believe the button factory is a good move, may want to buy Zipper Corp shares because they think the value will increase. People who believe the button factory is a bad idea, may want to sell Zipper Corp shares because they think the value will decrease. This means the company stock has both buyers and sellers.

Each business day, shares change hands, depending on how people feel about the company's future value. Some days there's more buying which can cause the stock price to rise. Some days there's more selling which can cause the stock price to fall. This is true for each public company in the market. As people buy and sell shares, stock prices can change each day. It's these exchanges, across thousands of companies and millions of people that make up a stock market.

When you see news that a stock market rose, it generally means that across public companies, the value of shares went up more than they went down. This is usually considered good news. People feel good about the future, and they're buying shares.

Now, because there are thousands of companies, there has to be an easy way to see the big picture across the market. We do this with an index, which is an average of a specific group of stock prices. Indices help us understand if markets went up or down on a given day by looking at the performance of a group of companies. For example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is an average of the stock prices of 30 large US companies. The S&P 500 is an average of 500 companies.

We hear a lot about stock markets in the U.S., but there are stock markets all over the world. In each market, companies share ownership with the public and that ownership is exchanged over and over. And we get to see how it all comes together across public companies thanks to indices we see in the news each business day.

But if all the tweets could be captured and organized all the time, amazing things could be possible. The town would have a resource for knowing what's interesting and who's talking about it. This is what Twitter Search has done for Twitter - it captures and organizes every tweet so that it's possible to find people and specific information in real time.

For instance, meet Roy of Ice Cream by Roy. Other than the people who come to his store, he could never hear what customers said about his ice cream. However, because everyone in the town uses twitter, he can now search for "Ice Cream By Roy" and see tweets from people who mention his product. Then, he can reply to say thanks or follow their future updates. Twitter search helps Roy listen to customers and make the flavors they want.

It's also a great way to learn about news. When an explosion is heard outside of town, the townspeople report it in real time. This means that Roy can check Twitter search to find a constant stream of information, sometimes from the very people who experienced it. He can even limit the results to tweets near a specific location. It's news as it happens.

Every minute of every day on Twitter, people are using some words more than others. Maybe the town has a new mayor, a concert came to town, or the same joke is being told over and over. If the most popular words could appear on a sign, a person just arriving in town could get a feel for what was interesting to the residents at the moment.

On Twitter, the most used words are known as trends and they're a great way to see what's interesting on Twitter. You can always find up to the minute trends on your Twitter profile, or search.twitter.com. Clicking a trending topic shows the most recent tweets that include that word or phrase.

Sometimes, Twitter members work together and use a specific key word, called a hash tag, to connect related tweets. For example, people talking about elections may use the hashtag #vote to create the connection. The way, by including the #vote tag, Roy can make sure his tweet is part of the discussion.

If enough people use the tag, it may become a trend, attracting even more people to the conversation.

Of course tracking these conversations is easy because Roy can search right on his Twitter profile. And if he wants to see results over time, he can save the search.

With Twitter, all the small messages are useful when shared between people, but by organizing all the tweets and making them searchable, we can learn what's on the minds of millions.

These days, as long as we have an Internet connection, using the Web is pretty easy. We can visit billions of pages on things from pet alligators to the weather in Holland.

To help figure out how it works, let’s pretend we can get really small, follow the wires and explore what makes the Web work. In order to get to the Web, we need a connection from our home or business to the rest of the online world. This usually happens through the phone or cable lines, or even satellite. This connection means that information from around the world can reach our computers.

If we could see the connection, the information coming through it would look like little packets of code. It doesn’t make sense to most people. We need a translator, something that turns the packets of code into the words and images we see on a website.

For this, we use a web browser. It translates the information and makes it useful to us. But that code has to come from somewhere, right? If we could follow it to its home, we’d see that it’s coming from another computer. Not a regular computer, but one that’s built to make web pages available.

It’s called a “server.” The words and images that appear on our screen live here in the server. If there was only one server this would be simple. But there are millions of servers and web pages. We need a way to find a specific page on a specific server.

We do this with web addresses. Each server and website has a unique one. As long as we have the right web address, we can visit a page on any server on the Web.

The reason we call it a “web” is that all the servers are connected. We can easily jump from one to the other using addresses via our web browser. And we don’t have to remember all the addresses.

Web pages use shortcuts or “links” – words and images we can click, that direct us to page after page. These links create a web of connections that are easy to navigate.

Together, this system makes up the World Wide Web. So, let’s sum it up.

To visit a website, we type in a web address or click a link. The information for the website lives on a server. Itcomes to us as little packets of code, and our web browser translates this code into words, photos, music, videos, and links that help us get things done. Yaaay!

The chances are you’ve been using apps for years. Your home or work computer has apps like a spreadsheet program, calculator or photo editor. Recently these apps, or applications, evolved in a big way.
