And email addresses didn’t matter - she could always contact her friends using the website.  Soon Maria started to post her own updates. Her friends liked her posts and left comments.

But it’s not that simple. Julia wants to publish some of her photos to help spread the word, but she’s concerned because photos are easy to copy. She could lose control and not be able to make a living from her talent.

So she does some research and learns that in the U.S., as with other countries, we have laws that give creators of materials like books, images, movies, artwork and music a way to own and protect their creations. It’s called copyright law. Owning the copyright means having the exclusive right to manage and sell the material.

And she’s surprised to find that when she creates photos, she owns the copyright to them automatically, without taking any other action. Though she can always register them with the U.S. Copyright office for good measure.

She likes being covered by copyright law, but it limits her exposure, because her permission is required for sharing a photo. She needs a way to make some of her photos more sharable.

Her research leads her to Creative Commons, which is a set of licenses that she can use to make her copyrighted photos free for sharing.

By licensing specific photos with a Creative Commons license, she doesn’t have to approve each person’s request for sharing, as long as a few simple rules are followed. She chooses a license that requires the user to provide attribution, or credit for her work, and to be non-commercially.

Using Creative Commons means she retains some rights while her photos and name have the potential to be seen by many more people because they can be shared for free.

After considering the options, Julia decides to license a few photos with Creative Commons, and use copyright with “all rights reserved” for the rest of her portfolio because it will be important for her goals. So she adds copyright information, which includes the year the photo was first taken and her name, wherever those photos appear.

Across the country, Kelly needs a travel photo for his magazine article. He searches, and finds a nice one online and notes a Creative Commons license and Julia’s name. His use is commercial, so he visits her site and finds more photos that fit his needs.

The one he wants is marked “all right reserved”, so to avoid copyright infringement and potential legal issues, he contacts Julia who gives him permission to use the photo in exchange for a license fee. This way, Kelly can use the photo in his magazine and Julia can build her career.

Both Kelly and Julia understand that ownership and proper use of materials can be difficult to navigate, especially because the Web is global and copyright laws can vary by country.

For example, most light switches are considered “dumb” - they don’t collect, send or receive information. But if the switch could communicate with other devices and the Internet, amazing things could be possible.

When you wake up in the morning and turn on the closet light, the switch could send messages to other things. Your coffee pot springs to life, your home thermostat raises its temperature and your radio switches to the traffic report.

At dusk, the light switch can check the Internet for the sunset times and turn on automatically. And that’s just the beginning. Your appliances could connect to the electric grid and only wash dishes when electricity is cheap.

The Internet of things also applies to cities and towns. Roads could have sensors that detect ice and automatically send data to drivers and road crews.

When water is scarce, gardens across a city could have sensors that measure moisture and even check weather reports so water use is smarter. The possibilities are endless and we’re only getting started.

Let’s say a tree falls on a powerline and one thousand homes lose power. With the current grid, utility employees often physically re-route power, which takes time.

With the Smart Grid, sensors and software would detect and immediately route the power around the problem, limiting the issue to fewer homes.

And there’s more. The price of electricity changes throughout the day, but we can’t see it with the current meters on our homes. It may be expensive during peak hours and cheap late at night. With new Smart meters at your home, you could set your dishwasher to run when power is cheap. This provides more control of your energy bill and helps prevent blackouts at peak hours.

The Smart Grid also means news ways to use renewable energy. Power generation can now be distributed across multiple sources so the system is more stable and efficient.

It’s this ability to communicate and manage electricity that makes the grid smarter and helps us avoid burning more fossil fuels in the future.

You've probably seen it. You receive an email from your bank or trusted company and it's asking you for information. It looks real, but it's designed to fool you into handing over important information. This is a scam called Phishing, and you need to avoid it.

Most of us have gotten used to doing business online. We buy and sell things. We have accounts with sensitive information. The risk of doing business online is low, as long as you deal directly with organizations you trust. Problems occur when criminals impersonate these organizations, and fool you into handing over sensitive information, like account numbers, passwords, and PIN numbers.

The key to avoiding this scam is awareness. Here's one example. You receive an email that looks like a trustworthy message from a bank. It asks you to click a link to verify information. You assume it's legit. So you click the link and log in to what appears to be your bank's website. At this point, the scam is complete.

They were able to fool you by impersonating the bank's website. There are a few keys to detecting phishing emails. They often try to scare you by saying "your account has been accessed" or "security has been compromised." They also insist that you click a link to verify information or fill out a form.

Do NOT click links or fill out forms in suspicious emails. The email may also have misspellings and call you something like "Valued Customer." The crooks don't know your name! Remember, phishing emails may use the exact same logos, phone numbers, and addresses that appear on your statements or bills.

Always be suspicious of an email that asks for your information. No exceptions! If you receive a phishing email, stay calm. There's no risk in receiving it. Just delete it. You can also safely report it by forwarding it to:

If an email does lead you to a suspicious website, remember to look at the web address. The address in your browser should look familiar. If you suspect that criminals have your information, immediately contact organizations where you have accounts.

To protect yourself in the long run, you might also consider anti-phishing software. Further, check your online accounts and credit reports regularly, and quickly report anything that is out of place.

You might assume that the Terms of Service doesn’t really matter or reading it isn’t worth your time. So, you check the box without knowing what it says. And that’s where problems can begin. Think about it this way.

Imagine visiting a water park with slides and pools. Before you jump in, you need to sign a contract that looks a lot like Terms of Service. The water looks inviting, so you quickly sign it and jump in.

Then two weeks later, a commercial for the water park appears and there you are, in a swimsuit, on TV. You’re horrified and frustrated. How could this happen? They didn’t ask me about this. Did they?

The contract you signed when entering the park was legally binding. That contract said your image could be used in advertising, but you never saw that section. Now, it’s too late.

The water park contract and Terms of Service on websites and apps are similar. Both are meant to make the relationship between you and the company clear and help avoid disputes.

So that check mark has a lot of power. When you check it, you are agreeing to a set of rules, written by the company, that could impact your privacy, your access to the site and your ability to resolve disputes with the company, among other things.

An example is social networking. Before using a new service, you must check the Terms of Service box. This time, however, you read it and find that it outlines items like ownership of what you share and what represents misuse of the service.

Down in the middle of the document you see information on privacy and find that the company has the right to sell your personal information to other companies, including your email address. In another section, you learn that your account can be closed at any time, without notice.

Suddenly, this new service looks different to you. The terms of service has details that matter and could influence your decision to join. This time, you decide it’s not worth it.

Reading and understanding the Terms of Service agreement provided a way to know your rights and understand the website’s policies. So, it’s not just a single checkbox. If you check it, you are agreeing to a number of checkboxes for rules that could matter to you.

If the rules seem fair to you, check the box and dive in. But if you don’t agree with them, you have the freedom to not check the box and find another service that better fits your needs.

Then, he can reply to say thanks or follow their future updates. Twitter search helps Roy listen to customers and make the flavors they want.

He can even limit the results to tweets near a specific location. It's news as it happens.

Of course, some ice cream was more popular than others and that was okay. Sylvia’s pickle ice cream had a very small but loyal following. That was fine. She only needed enough income to buy ingredients for her next batch. Jarret’s red velvet ice cream became so famous, he created his own store. Over time, people started to think differently about ice cream.

It didn’t always come from a factory. It also came from friends and neighbors. It became something to share, something to bring people together, something to celebrate. Big Ice Cream company still made the best vanilla around, and to their surprise, demand even grew. But it was the unique, original and authentic flavors made by the residents, that brought people to Scoopville.

Trojans, our last example, are sneaky bugs. Like the real trojan horse, they’re a trick. If you fall for it, you end up downloading a virus from the Internet. It may appear to be a game or useful software, but hidden inside is a program that can cause problems.

For example, these programs can open new backdoors, giving criminals access to your computer and information over the Web. Not fun. To avoid trojans, only download software from sites you trust. Just like washing your hands and covering your cough, you have to be aware of what causes problems to avoid them. Keep your computer up to date and get anti-virus software - it will help prevent problems and help you recover.

And please…don't click on links, attachments and downloadable files unless you know they're legit.
