Meet Jasmine. She's 20 years old, and her goal is to buy a home in the future. Jasmine is already saving for that future home purchase and recently learned how to save responsibly.

When she was younger, she had a piggy bank and often added money to it. The problem with a piggy bank was that her money just sat there. She got out the same amount she put in.

Instead of using a piggy bank, Jasmine found a way to help her money grow over time by saving it in a bank or credit union, where she can easily get it back when she needs it.

While it's there, the bank uses her money to help other customers who need to borrow money. It's like Jasmine is loaning her money to the bank. Because she's helping the bank, they add a little extra money to her account automatically.

It's these payments from the bank that help her money grow over time. This extra money is called "interest", and it's paid to Jasmine over the course of a year. The amount of interest she earns is based on two things: The amount she has in the bank, and the Annual Percentage Yield or APY, which is a rate set by the bank. Here's how they work together.

Let's say you deposit $100 in a savings account with a 3% APY. That $100 will earn $3 in interest over the course of a year. Now, you could take that $3 in interest and buy a latte. But you decide to leave it in the bank.

This way you have more money in the bank, and earn interest on $103 instead of https://www.dotcomtruths.com/$100. As long as you leave it alone, your money will grow even faster because the interest adds up year after year. It's called "compound interest" and this simple idea will help Jasmine buy a home. Here's how.

In her piggy bank, Jasmine has saved $5,000. But for the home she wants, she knows she'll need more, and realizes that smart saving is all about thinking long term. If she deposits this in a bank, and earn 3% APY, that $5,000 would become $9,000 in 20 years. That's $4,000 more thanks to compound interest. $9,000 is good, but it may not be enough.

To help her money grow even faster, Jasmine decides that she can add $100 to her savings each month. That's $1,200 a year - even more money to earn interest! This will be a huge help. Jasmine can see she's getting close.

With the $5,000 she has saved, plus the money she adds monthly, she can save $29,000 over 20 years, if she saved it in a piggy bank. But with compound interest from her bank, that $29,000 could become over $42,000 in 20 years. A nice start on buying her dream home! Emma loves dogs and recently, her favors for friends have turned into a business. And now she needs a website to do it full time. But she’s not sure how it all fits together. Does she only need a domain name like emmasdogcare.com or is there more to think about?

Over coffee a friend gave Emma a brief lesson on getting started with a custom-built website. First, she would need a domain name. Emma likes the domain name emmasdogcare.com for her site, but she needs to be sure it’s available. To check availability, she can use a domain name website to search for it.

If emmasdogcare.com is available, she can register it. This means paying a modest annual fee to the company that registers the name. As long as she keeps up with these payments, the name is exclusively hers to use for the website and email addresses.

If the .com suffix is not available, she can use others like .biz or .net. With a domain name secured, she could think about what the website should contain. She knows some local web designers and developers who help her get a design in place that has images, colors and descriptions of her services.

She now has two important things: the domain name and a design for the site. Next, her website needs a home - a place for the images and words to live and be accessible on the web. That home is a kind of computer called a server. When a person visits a website, what appears on their screen originates from the server.

The problem is that these servers can be a pain to manage, so most people work with companies who specialize in managing servers, DNS and websites. These companies are called “hosts”. For a fee, Emma can give her website a secure and reliable home and leave the technical aspects to the experts. The host gives Emma and her designers and developers a secure way to build the site and make changes.

Now she has it all, but to get her site online, she’ll need to make sure all the organizations are on the same page. This means telling her domain name registrar where to find the new website at the host. This way, when someone types emmasdogcare.com, the domain name system knows where to find the site and make it available.

Once everything is set, the system works seamlessly. Emmasdogcare now has a home on the web and Emma gets to pick her favorite dog pics for her website.

Hi there. In this video, you’ll learn what a subdomain is and how they’re used.

A subdomain is a subset, or a smaller part of a larger domain.

To better understand the concept of subdomains, let’s dissect a domain name from the top down.

A complete domain name includes a Top-level Domain or TLD, and a Second-level Domain, or SLD.

The TLD is the part that occurs right after the last dot in the domain name; this is why TLDs are sometimes called domain extensions. In this example .com is the TLD. While there are several types of TLDs, the most common are .com, .org, and net.

The SLD, or second level domain, is the part that occurs immediately in front of the last dot in the domain name. In this example, it’s the name of the business. The SLD is what makes a domain name unique.

Now this part… right here… that displays before first dot in the domain name – it’s the subdomain. That’s right… fun fact: WWW is actually a subdomain.

The good news is you don’t have to use WWW for your subdomain; instead, you can replace it with almost any word to create a subdomain with a unique web address, without having to purchase a new domain name.

Subdomains function as an extension of a registered domain name, allowing you to send visitors to a different web address, or allowing you to point to specific IP addresses or directories in your hosting account.The most common use for a subdomain is organizing or dividing website content into distinct sections.

If your website has a substantial amount of content on a given topic, or there’s content on your website that you want to draw attention to, say for marketing purposes, you can create a subdomain for it. A subdomain sets this content apart from the main site and gives it a unique web address, without having to register a new domain name.

Consider the dog-friendly winery, Molly’s Bark and Wine.

During her first year of business, the owner has amassed a large online photo collection of dogs who’ve visited the winery.

To highlight the business’ unique dog-friendly atmosphere and provide a dedicated space for her expanding photo gallery, she creates the subdomain, ‘dogs’, under her registered domain name, mollysbarkandwine.com.

The WWW in her domain name is replaced with the word ‘dogs’ and the new web address for the dedicated photo gallery is dogs.mollysbarkandwine.com.

As an added bonus, this subdomain is treated as a unique website address and in turn, may drive new customers to her website.

Subdomains also offer a great way to create language-specific versions of websites or to accommodate information that may not be critical to the primary website, such as an events page, blog or store.

To recap, a subdomain is a subset of a registered domain name. Subdomains are most commonly used to divide websites into distinct sections that have unique web addresses.

The easiest way to open a chrome Incognito window is with the keyboard shortcut combination **Ctrl-Shift-N **(Windows) or Command-Shift-N (macOS).

Another way is to click on the menu on the upper right – it's the three vertical dots – and select New Incognito Window from the list.

What is Image Resolution and Pixels?

This video follows the story of Neil, who learns why he can’t enlarge and print a photo that was taken with his phone. Using an analogy of a blanket, the video illustrates what happens when a small image is enlarged and what’s needed for printing larger photos. It teaches:

These days, we’re all photographers. We take digital photos with cameras, phones and even computers. And some of us love to share them in printed form or on websites. But getting the most out of digital images means understanding how they work.

Neil just started learning about photography and for now, he’s just using the camera on his phone. Recently he took a photo that was his best work. He envisioned a big version of it on his wall for all to see. So, he saved it and took it to a photo center to have it printed. After taking a look, the photo guy showed him the options. The largest size he could print for this photo was 4X6. Six feet wide seemed big enough to Neil. But the photo guy apologized with a chuckle, he meant 4 by 6 inches.

Neill was crushed. The photo looked so good on his phone. He didn’t understand why this photo couldn’t be enlarged. Seeing his despair, the photo guy gave him a little lesson in digital images.

Strangely, he started with blankets, just like at grandma’s house. He said to imagine a blanket that’s 4 feet by 4 feet. When someone knitted that blanket, they used 8 packs of yarn. When the blanket is this size it looks great and keeps you warm because the yarn is packed tightly together. But when you stretch it out to 6 feet by 6 feet, you can see the holes and it stops looking so warm. Stretch it even more and it looks more like a net than a blanket.

His point was that yarn matters. Only blankets made from a lot of yarn can be stretched without becoming useless. He then explained that Neil’s photo is like a blanket with too-little yarn. He could stretch the image and make it bigger, but it would start to look blurry. This is because, like blankets made of yarn, digital photos are made of pixels. These are tiny bits of color that make up the image. When the pixels are stretched, the image quality suffers.

After a bit of research, Neil found that his cameraphone has 1 megapixel camera, which means it captures 1 million pixels in an image. The image may look good on a small screen, but this number of pixels is only enough to print a small picture. For large prints, he would need a camera that captures millions more pixels. For example, a 5 or 10 megapixel camera, even on a smartphone, could capture more than enough pixels, especially if he learns the basics of lighting and composition.

The only problem? Cameras and devices are expensive for Neil. For now he’ll just stick with his cameraphone and even print photos at home. Who knows, one day soon his wall may become a statement after all.

Here’s how accounts work for Angie, who is getting started with the Internet:

Angie first needs a way to send and receive digital messages online. So, she creates an email account and email address, which is usually free. This is important because it’s part of her online identity and something she’ll need to create other accounts.

With an email address in place, Angie can go to websites and look for words like “create an account” or “new account”. When she clicks this link or button, a form appears that asks for information that establishes her online identity.

The website needs two types of account information: her personal information and her login information. Angie carefully fills out a form that asks for her name, email address, and personal information. This establishes her online identity and creates a way for the site to send her email messages.

Next, she creates a username and secret password for logging into the website.

This information will unlock the website’s most useful services. The username may be Angie’s email address or a unique and memorable name. Angie decides to use the username “angieonline”.

Next, she needs to create a password to go with that username – and the password deserves special care. If it is shared or stolen it could cause major problems.

Someone could use her password to log into her accounts and steal money or her online identity.

So, she follows a few rules about passwords. First, she uses a password that is difficult to guess. Names, numbers or dates that are part of her identity should not be used. Second, she includes a combination of letters, numbers and symbols, like this. And third, if her password is written down, it is hidden from view.

Now that Angie has an account and what she needs to login, she is on her way to living a more digital lifestyle and using personalized websites that are designed to help her be more connected, productive and efficient.

Imagine a hostage situation. A criminal has kidnapped a person, tied them up and is now talking to the police. The kidnapper has a demand. He will trade the hostage for money.

This is called a ransom and it’s essentially a trade - the criminal wants payment for the freedom of the hostage. Today, this same idea can apply to our computers and devices.

Instead of kidnapping a person, criminals lock your computer, and demand a ransom from you to unlock it. This is called a Ransomware attack. Here’s how it usually works.

In order for a criminal to get access to your computer, you usually have to click on something like an email attachment or a link on a criminal website.

To encourage you to click attachments, criminals will try to make the email look official, or familiar, as if it came from a trustworthy source.

The attachment may look like a harmless document or photo. The same is true for websites with dangerous links. When when you click it, a program runs on your computer that locks your files and prevents you from accessing them.

Usually, a message appears on your screen that alerts you to the problem and includes instructions for solving it.

In most cases, the criminals demand a ransom to unlock the computer and require that payment is made in a way that is untraceable, like through Bitcoin. If payment is made, the criminals usually provide a code that can be used to unlocked the computer and files.

More sophisticated ransomware can also infect your computer through a network or by finding security holes that may not even require a click from you. Ransomware attacks are similar to other threats like viruses, worms and trojans.

Problems can be prevented by being a responsible computer user. Keep your operating system, browsers and applications up to date. And awareness is key. Only open attachments when you know the source and be suspicious of messages asking for privileges to access your computer. The criminals are sneaky.

Most antivirus programs can help you detect ransomware when it arrives and may be able to help you remove it. And finally, always keep a backup of your files on a hard drive or online service so you can recover if your computer remains locked.

Ransomware is a reality of using computers and the internet. With awareness and responsible computer practices, you can avoid problems and prevent your files from becoming hostages.

Often, there is really only one thing standing between your sensitive information and criminals - your password. If they get it, they can get into banks accounts and private files, and wreak havoc. For this reason, it's important to know what makes a password strong and secure.

Chances are, you use passwords everyday. To open your computer, to log into your favorite websites, to get work done.

The easy route is to have a simple password that works everywhere. Unfortunately, this can be a problem. Criminals are very good at guessing passwords. Some have computer programs that can make millions of guesses until something works.

And if they already know information about you, it's even easier. Your job is to create a password that is very hard to guess. Here's how:

Your first thought may be to use a pet's name, a birthdate, an address or parts of a phone number. These things are too easy for criminals to discover, so don't use them. Your password should not include info about you.

Thankfully, there are ways to have memorable, but hard-to-guess passwords. Consider this: In addition to single words, phrases can also be easy to remember. Maybe it's a favorite song lyric, or quote. An example is "Jack and Jill Went Up The Hill” That's easy to remember, right?

Well, your password is there - it's the first letter of each word. In this example, this would be your password. That's not something that is easily guessed.

Here's why. First - it's not in the dictionary. This makes guessing it harder. There are about 60,000 words in English. A computer can test out those words pretty quickly, so don't use them.

But there's more. This password could still be stronger by adding upper case letters, numbers or special characters. So this is a very strong password - but there's still a risk.

If you write it down, be careful where you keep it. And be aware that someone can look over your shoulder or find it in your trash. Giving it to loved-ones is also risky - they may not be as cautious as you are. Only you should know your password.

Criminals may also try to fool you into handing it over via phone calls. Never tell anyone your password over the phone.

And be careful when you get an email that asks for a password - it could be a scam. To help avoid problems, don't use the same password everywhere – that’s like having one key that unlocks everything you own. The stakes are high if you lose it.

Also, be careful if you use a computer that is not yours. Let's say you check email using a computer in a store, library or computer lab. You login, check email and walk away. The next person to use that computer now has access to your email account and all the information in it. Always remember to log out of each site you visit on a computer that isn't yours.

Passwords are an essential part of life online - and if we're not careful about keeping them secret, they can cause big problems. By understanding the risks and making passwords stronger, we can feel a little more secure.

Imagine for a moment, you’ve written a song and people love it. Because you wrote it, you own it and can use it to earn a living and control if and how it is used by others.

This is the basic idea of copyright law.

These laws make it possible for creative people to earn a living from their creations. But copyright has limits.

Let’s fast-forward to three generations from now. By this time in future, the song lives on and could be useful to others, but you’re not around to control ownership or make money from it.

The question becomes: If someone wants to use your song after so much time, should permission still be required?

Or, does it make more sense for the copyright to expire after a period of time and for the song to be open for use by everyone without permission or payment? This is one way to think about works that are not copyrighted and in the public domain.

In most countries, creative works can only be owned for a period of time. Once that time passes, the story, diagram, song, photograph or any other creative work becomes part of the public domain and is available for use without payment or permission.

This means a huge amount of older creative work is available for use. Want to use a song in your commercial? If the song is in the public domain you can use it for free and without permission!

Want to use an old image to create art? Public domain photos are available without a fee or permission. But the public domain contains much more than old articles, songs and art.

The owner of any creative work can choose to make it part of the public domain at any time.

Many creators contribute their work to the public domain to encourage use by others and contribute to a publicly shared resource.

Further, some organizations don’t use copyright for their publications, making them part of the public domain. For example, most works created by the U.S. government like reports and statistics are not copyrighted as a matter of policy and are free to use in the U.S.

The real beauty of the public domain is that it is a truly public resource that is not controlled by any government, organization or person.

You can find huge collections of public domain materials with a simple online search.

And unlike copyright, which requires permission from the creator, public domain works can modified, reproduced or distributed without payment or permission.
