Think about it this way… Organizations like banks depend on each customer having a unique identity. They establish this with information like your name, social security number, address and birthdate.

Once your identity is established, it becomes easier to work with the bank, manage your finances, withdraw money, and apply for credit cards and loans. Online, you can use passwords and PINs to access your accounts and personal information.

If a criminal steals your identity, they can fool organizations and access the same resources you can. If this happens, they can change your contact info, billing address and login information so you lose access. Then, they can apply for credit cards and loans that put you in debt and ruin your credit, before you even know there’s a problem.

Identity theft can happen to anyone and it takes years to recover. The key to reducing this risk is awareness.

In order for a criminal to steal your identity they need your personal information like account numbers, passwords, medical records and social security numbers.

This information often appears on documents that criminals may be able to find when we’re careless. Always keep sensitive documents in a safe place and if possible, have a mailbox with a lock. Be careful what you put in the trash and shred any documents that may be a risk.

Your computers and devices can also be risks. Use strong passwords and PINs, and a password manager to help make it easy.

Criminals may also contact you directly, posing as an organization, and fool you into handing over the personal information they need. Remember, organizations like your tax office and banks will NOT call you to ask for personal or account information. Be aware and never give out passwords, PINs or social security numbers over the phone.

The same is true with email and websites, where criminals are very good at appearing official. If an email looks suspicious or asks for your account information, don’t click any links. Just delete it.

Protecting yourself also means paying close attention to bank statements and bills. If something looks out of place, contact the organization immediately.

Above all, remember that your identity is a target for criminals. Don’t make it easy for them and you’ll be able to avoid years of problems.

These are possible because their use is very narrow – the computer can be programmed do a small number of things amazingly well. But the computers we have today are just getting started.

The challenge of true artificial intelligence is a computer with the same broad intelligence as a human. Here, the same computer that can beat you at chess, would be able to teach itself new concepts and react appropriately to your emotions...It would be able to converse with you like another person and comprehend abstract ideas.

This sort of intelligence may be in our future. Here are a couple of the big challenges.

The first is learning to learn. Here, additional instructions from a human wouldn’t be needed for the computer to teach itself new skills, ideas and concepts.

For example, it would be able to learn from experimentation, interactions with humans or exploring data and information from other sources. This gets computers closer to human intelligence.

But the real challenge here is creating computers that have the emotional intelligence and empathy that make us human.

Think about it this way… Human intelligence comes from a huge, complicated mix of life experiences, education, culture, emotion, genetics, and much more. All these things overlap and make us the intelligent people we are.

We take it for granted, but understanding and interacting naturally with humans is really complex.

This is a problem that’s very difficult to solve and likely a long way off.

And there is even another level of intelligence that we can imagine.

The competition requires skill and talent, but what really matters is how teams communicate and collaborate, or not.

Any successful team, whether it’s a soccer squad or lab of scientists, works together in the same ways. They define the goal and what steps are required to reach it. They communicate and develop a sense of strengths and weaknesses. This helps them identify gaps that must be filled to be competitive and reach the goal.

Having the best player or most brilliant scientist isn't enough. To win, they must work together to turn weaknesses into strengths.

Let’s consider two teams in our competition: green and purple. Team Green got started by reviewing the challenge, dividing it into steps, and discussing each other’s skills and ideas for completing the robot. All input was welcomed. These discussions showed gaps in their skills that could slow them down. They considered each gap and how they could work together to fill it.

For example, the robot was electric and electrical engineering wasn’t a strength.

During the project, they agreed that any team member could propose an idea or share a concern. This open communication helped them make necessary adjustments along the way. Before long, victory was in view because the team was operating as one.

Team Purple, despite their talent, was in disarray. Andre assumed the role of team leader and without a discussion, divided the team into two groups: hardware and software. These groups got to work without discussing their skills, strengths or weaknesses.

Each group followed their own path and assumed it would work out. They had concerns, but Andre was dismissive. Nothing was more important than speed. The team also saw that Claire was distracted and not contributing to the software side. When Team Purple finally shared their progress, it was bad news. The software didn’t match the hardware and they realized they’d have to start over.

It’s not difficult to imagine which team was better prepared to win. Experience and expertise are not advantages when team members are dismissed or some members don’t contribute.

On the other hand, when teams communicate clearly and work together to identify and solve problems. They can overcome challenges and be stronger than other teams.

Notice the unnatural mouth position and dark eyes... the shoulders will be off-kilter, arms, reaching, grabbing. Legs, limpy - skin, pale. This is a zombie.

Be careful this Halloween - you may see people that resemble zombies. Remember, zombies don’t eat candy - only brains.

When you encounter a real zombie, it’s time to have a plan. Here’s how to survive an attack.

Your first reaction may be to retreat to a home or business. This is only a short term solution because they will never stop - ever. Instead, consider heading to a Costco. Don’t plan to wait out an attack without proper rations.

Now keep your cool - remember that zombies may move quickly in the early stages of infection - don’t underestimate their speed. Also, consider a retreat to high altitudes. Studies have shown that zombies react poorly to cold weather, causing them to become brittle and slow.

Lastly, zombies can’t swim, so a retreat via boat can help. And remember those rations.

If you’re not the retreating type, the obvious next move is counter-attack. This brings us to our last step - how to kill the UNdead. The simple idea is... kill the brain, stop the zombie. This is generally done through head trauma or decapitation. But any method that removes the zombie-brain’s ability to direct the undead body will work.

As starting points, we suggest large caliber bullets to the head, or decapitation via machete, ax or chainsaw. Now, chainsaws are advanced tools that should be used carefully. Napalm or grenades can also be effective, but be carefull! A flaming zombie can be even more dangerous than a real one.

If your friend has a zombie bite, unfortunately there is only one outcome. Infection is absolutely irreversible. Don’t bother with antiseptic or band-aids. Your friend is not your friend anymore. Face the inevitable and save your brain. Kill them with dignity before they become undead too.

Because she owns the headphones, she has the right to sell them or give them away. Ownership means they’re her property. When ownership of physical property, like headphones, changes, it’s easy to see.

But Candice is also creative. She takes photos and has ideas. She uses her mind to produce valuable things like music. When she creates a new song, she owns it and has a right to use it as she wishes, just like a physical object.

The problem is that the ownership of intangible things like music, literature and photography is difficult to see. Someone could wrongly claim ownership of her song and sell it without her knowing. To prevent these problems, she needs a public way to establish her ownership so that she alone can decide how it will be used.

In many countries, intellectual property laws work to establish and protect ownership of intangible property like Candice’s song. They are copyright, patent, and trademark and laws, among others. It’s these laws that allow people to control distribution of and earn money from the things they create with their minds.

For example, let’s say Candice, first, wants to be sure she is the only person who can reproduce or sell her song. Copyright law is what gives her this right. As the creator, she owns the copyright automatically, which means she is the only one who can reproduce or sell the song. To make her ownership publicly known, she registers her song with the Copyright Office.

Second, Candice invented a new kind of instrument and wants to be sure that no one can copy it. She does this by filing a patent application with the patent office that states what it is and what it does. If the patent is granted, she can prevent others from copying her invention.

Third, with her innovations, Candice is able to create a new business with a unique brand that includes a name and logo. To identify her new instrument by her brand, and to distinguish her from competitors, she applies for a trademark registration with the trademark office that describes her business name and logo. Candice uses the ™ in her logo once she starts using the brand to sell her instrument. And she can use the R symbol once the trademark is officially registered. These symbols show that she has the right to prevent others from her industry from looking too much like her brand and confusing customers.

Candice’s music business is just one example. Copyright, patents and trademarks can apply to a wide variety of intangible or intellectual property. These laws ensure that even if we can’t hold something in our hands, we can still own it, protect it and use it to earn a living.

The first time you use an app or online service, you’re likely to see a checkbox that says something like, You agree to our Terms of Service. To proceed, you have to check the box.

You might assume that the Terms of Service doesn’t really matter or reading it isn’t worth your time. So, you check the box without knowing what it says. And that’s where problems can begin. Think about it this way.

Imagine visiting a water park with slides and pools. Before you jump in, you need to sign a contract that looks a lot like Terms of Service. The water looks inviting, so you quickly sign it and jump in.

Then two weeks later, a commercial for the water park appears and there you are, in a swimsuit, on TV. You’re horrified and frustrated. How could this happen? They didn’t ask me about this. Did they?

The contract you signed when entering the park was legally binding. That contract said your image could be used in advertising, but you never saw that section. Now, it’s too late.

The water park contract and Terms of Service on websites and apps are similar. Both are meant to make the relationship between you and the company clear and help avoid disputes.

So that check mark has a lot of power. When you check it, you are agreeing to a set of rules, written by the company, that could impact your privacy, your access to the site and your ability to resolve disputes with the company, among other things.

An example is social networking. Before using a new service, you must check the Terms of Service box. This time, however, you read it and find that it outlines items like ownership of what you share and what represents misuse of the service.

Down in the middle of the document you see information on privacy and find that the company has the right to sell your personal information to other companies, including your email address. In another section, you learn that your account can be closed at any time, without notice.

Suddenly, this new service looks different to you. The terms of service has details that matter and could influence your decision to join. This time, you decide it’s not worth it.

Reading and understanding the Terms of Service agreement provided a way to know your rights and understand the website’s policies. So, it’s not just a single checkbox. If you check it, you are agreeing to a number of checkboxes for rules that could matter to you.

If the rules seem fair to you, check the box and dive in. But if you don’t agree with them, you have the freedom to not check the box and find another service that better fits your needs.

These programs are usually designed by criminals to multiply and spread from computer-to-computer like a disease. If one makes it to your computer, it can erase your files, send emails without your permission or even communicate sensitive info to criminals.

Let's take a closer look, because what we call computer viruses can actually be Viruses, worms or trojans - we’ll start with viruses.

These bugs hitch a ride when something, like a file, is shared between computers. This often happens via attachments sent in email or shared USB drives. Once someone clicks to open the file, the damage is done. The virus is now on that computer, where it starts to multiply and look for chances to hitch a ride to a new computer.

Like a sick human, it’s sometimes hard to to tell when a file has a virus. For this reason, the best defense is anti-virus software. It prevents viruses from getting to your computer and removes them when they are found.

Now, worms are a little scarier. They are programs that spread to computers without humans doing anything. Criminals create worms to spread via computers that are connected in a network. They worm their way from computer-to-computer automatically. Whether it's a small office or a global network like the Internet. Usually, the worms find a back door – a way to trick the computer’s software into letting them in. Once they're in, they look for the same backdoor in similar computers, wreaking havoc along the way.

The best defense is keeping your computer software up to date at work and home. This helps close the doors and prevent problems.

Trojans, our last example, are sneaky bugs. Like the real trojan horse, they’re a trick. If you fall for it, you end up downloading a virus from the Internet. It may appear to be a game or useful software, but hidden inside is a program that can cause problems.

For example, these programs can open new backdoors, giving criminals access to your computer and information over the Web. Not fun. To avoid trojans, only download software from sites you trust. Just like washing your hands and covering your cough, you have to be aware of what causes problems to avoid them. The problem with money, for most people, is that it's not always in-hand when we need it.

Thankfully, we can borrow. Banks give us a loan and we pay them back later, usually with a little extra money called interest. Interest is like a fee for borrowing money.

But it doesn’t always make sense to ask the bank to borrow money for everyday purchases, and carrying a lot of cash can be a pain. It would be easier if we could borrow money from the bank as we need it over a month, then pay it back later, all at once.

That’s what credit cards let us do. The bank gives us an easy way to pay today, and keep track of it, then pay them back later. Let’s look at how this works.

Meet Lucia. Her friend recently recommended getting a credit card. After thinking it over, she applied for one and soon a card arrived in the mail.

In reading the paperwork, she noticed a few big points about this credit card. First, her credit card has a limit of $500. It stops working when she spends that amount.

Second, her credit card comes with an interest rate, which is a percentage of the amount she spends. This interest is just like the fees her bank charges for loaning money, but it’s often more expensive, and this interest is optional. Here’s why:

She has a choice, if she only buys what she can afford and completely pays off her credit card each month, she can completely avoid paying interest. But, if she pays anything less, she has to pay interest on what she still owes. And over time, interest can build up quickly and make those purchases more expensive.

Because she's smart, her goal is to avoid interest and pay off her credit card, in full, every month. Yaaay!

But her friend Marlon wasn't so smart. He spent the limit on his credit card and didn’t even bother paying the minimum monthly payment. The interest and fees stacked up until he owed twice the amount he originally spent.

Frustrated, he gave up trying to manage it. This led the credit card company to report his debt which prevented him from getting other credit cards, borrowing money or using credit for years into the future.

Credit cards can be useful and convenient, but that doesn’t matter if they’re not managed responsibly. Buy only what you can afford, pay it off each month and you’ll have more money and better opportunities in the future.

Let's get started by talking about companies. There are two basic types. The first is called a private company. Ownership in these companies is private, which means it's not available to everyone. They are usually small to medium-sized and there are a lot of them, from the bakery down the street to a local trucking company. Private companies are typically owned by an individual or a small group of people. Because ownership is limited, we won't worry about them.

Our focus is on companies that offer ownership to everyone. These are called "public" companies. Here's how they work.

Let's say Zipper Corp is a successful company that has big plans. It wants to expand and build a button factory, but it doesn't have enough money. Because it's a public company, Zipper Corp can divide up the ownership of part of the company into thousands of pieces and sell them to people like Maya. These are company stock, also called shares. This way, Maya gets to own a small part of the company and Zipper Corp can raise money for their new factory. Being a public company allows Zipper Corp to raise money from lots of new owners like Maya.

Now, Maya's share of the company has a value that typically changes each business day. When Zipper Corp is doing well, the future of the company can look promising. This means the value of the company and the value of her shares may go up. People like Maya buy shares because they can make money by selling them at the right time. The big idea is to buy shares at a low price and sell them at a higher price. Of course, this is risky, because a company's future is hard to predict.

For example, people who believe the button factory is a good move, may want to buy Zipper Corp shares because they think the value will increase. People who believe the button factory is a bad idea, may want to sell Zipper Corp shares because they think the value will decrease. This means the company stock has both buyers and sellers.

Each business day, shares change hands, depending on how people feel about the company's future value. Some days there's more buying which can cause the stock price to rise. Some days there's more selling which can cause the stock price to fall. This is true for each public company in the market. As people buy and sell shares, stock prices can change each day. When you see news that a stock market rose, it generally means that across public companies, the value of shares went up more than they went down. This is usually considered good news. People feel good about the future, and they're buying shares.

Now, because there are thousands of companies, there has to be an easy way to see the big picture across the market. We do this with an index, which is an average of a specific group of stock prices. Indices help us understand if markets went up or down on a given day by looking at the performance of a group of companies. For example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is an average of the stock prices of 30 large US companies. The S&P 500 is an average of 500 companies.

We hear a lot about stock markets in the U.S., but there are stock markets all over the world. In each market, companies share ownership with the public and that ownership is exchanged over and over. And we get to see how it all comes together across public companies thanks to indices we see in the news each business day.
